Barbara Scharf Decker
Barbara Marie Scharf Decker was called home to the Lord on Sunday December 3, 2017. She passed
away at the Jewish Home of Eastern Pennsylvania. She was preceded in death by her-husband
and love of her life, Arthur Vaughn Decker who passed away December 8, 1966.
Born in Scranton on January 7, 1920, she was the daughter of Matthew and Mary Kaub Scharf.
Barbara was educated in the Scranton School District.
Barbara lived in Scranton most of her life, living in Waverly, PA in her later years with her daughter
Linda O'Leary. She was a snowbird who spent winters in Bonita Springs, Florida. During her
extended illness she has been a patient at the Jewish Nursing Home of Scranton. Barbara was a
parishioner of St. Patrick's Church, Scranton.
She loved playing scrabble with her family and doing crossword and jumble puzzles. An excellent
cook, she enjoyed cooking for her family. She was an avid reader and loved watching her favorite
baseball team, Boston Red Sox.
Barbara was a clerical worker at Bob O'Leary Sports Science until her retirement at the age of 85 in
2004. Previously she was employed by the Pesavento family of Scranton. For the next several years
she travelled and enjoyed her family. Starting in early childhood and throughout her life she regularly
attended St. Ann's novena. She was a loving, caring and nuturing mother, grandmother and great
grandmother. Throughout the years of her illness she remained cheerful and loving and maintained her
strong religious beliefs.
She is survived by her three daughters and son-in-laws, Carol and John Vachino, Barbara (Bobbi) and
Richard Kimble, and Linda and Bob O'Leary. Her eight grandchildren are Linda DuB orgel, John
Vachino and wife Kelli, Lauri and husband Robert Grow, Kimberly Dattilo, Edward Reed and wife
Michele, Jeffrey Reed and his wife Kim, Dr Robert O'Leary and wife Tonia and Kellee O'Leary. Her
great grandchildren are Brienna DuB orgel, John, Sydney and Gia Vachino, Robert)Hunter and Thomas
Grow, Patrick and Elissa Dattilo, Edward, Katie and Jeffrey Reed, Jacob, Jessica, Sarah, Robert and
Thomas O'Leary. Her great -great grandson is Bentley Dattilo. She was also preceded in death by a
sister Lillian Space and brother Joseph Scharf.

The funeral will be conducted on Thursday from the Miller Bean Funeral Home Inc., 436 Cedar Avenue, Scranton with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am in St. Patrick’s Church 1403 Jackson Street. Interment Cathedral Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday from 4-7 pm.
