Obituary for James "Jim" Carey

James "Jim" Carey
James “Jim” Carey, 90, passed away peacefully at Moses Taylor Hospital surrounded by his loving family on Friday, April 13, 2018, following a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Kathleen “Kate” Clarkin who died on May 9, 2014.
A lifelong South Scranton resident, he was the son of the late Francis and Gertrude Carey. Educated in Scranton public schools, he proudly served in the United States Air Force. Prior to retirement, he was employed by Wilson Meats, Burshell Dairy, and Lackawanna County.
A devout Catholic, Jim and his wife belonged to St. John’s Parish until it’s closure and then joined Nativity Church. Jim was a lifelong member and committed supporter of the Democratic Party; was always willing to volunteer his time. He was a past member of the Mountaineer Social Club and was an avid Notre Dame and Pittsburgh Steelers fan.
James was selflessly devoted to his family, working and sacrificing so he could provide all that he did for them.

He is survived by his four children; Jim and wife Jill, Tom, Jane Slagus, all of Scranton, and Kathy Lisowski and husband Robert, Old Forge; 7 grandchildren, Ian and Lyndsie Carey, Beth Grecsek and husband Chad, Amanda Slagus, Robert Lisowski Jr., Nicholas and Hannah Lisowski; 3 great-grandchildren Jameson McIntyre, Griffin and Quinn Grecsek; 2 sisters Joan Heider and Mary Carey; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother Frank and sister Claire.
The funeral will be on Wednesday from the Miller Bean Funeral Home Inc., 436 Cedar Ave. with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. John Neumann Parish at Nativity Church, 633 Orchard St. Scranton. Interment Cathedral Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M.
