I remember the wonderful Easter Sundays and the picnics at Aunt Marie and Uncle Harold's. Gathered around the table overflowing with food and then sitting on back porch surrounded by family. I also remember when my parents were away on a vacation and I sliced my nose in half, how Aunt Marie was so calm at the ER and didn't remind me that it was my own stupid fault that caused it all. In fact, they took us out to dinner that night! She also patiently let me have my Jeep in her garage for 2 days while Uncle Harold showed me how to lift the engine high enough over the 4-wheel drive stuff to drop the oil pan and check the crank shaft (that was warped) and then put it all back together again. All of these things done with so much love.
Always in my heart,
Luanne Rutherford

I’m very happy to share this memory with anyone who loved Aunt Marie and remembers her delicious chocolate cake. It had a thin layer of chocolate icing, was super moist and had a unique texture. It was baked in a Bundt or round tube pan. She shared this recipe with me and made me promise not to share it with anyone, although I know even she would agree that this is the perfect time to do so. My husband, Michael eats very few desserts but he always enjoyed a thick slice of his Aunt Marie’s chocolate cake at family gatherings. For many years I asked her for the recipe and she would tell me she could not share her secret ingredient. So I would cream? No! Belgian chocolate? No! Red wine? No! Then on one occasion, I must have worn her down and she sent me off to find a pen and paper. I thought how amazing she was to be able to recite exact portions of each individual ingredient. I returned excitedly and she began. I wrote down every word she said. “Two boxes of chocolate cake mix. Which ever is cheapest or on sale but always use two boxes, never one”. I still have that paper in my recipe box but I have never tried to duplicate it because clearly the secret ingredient was her love. In loving memory, Karen Bienas
